About meI have been specializing in English-Korean translation of patent specifications since 1978 after my graduation from Ulsan University in Korea with a degree of B. E. in Materials Engineering (specializing in Electronic Materials) in 1976. More specifically describing, I had worked at several Korean patent and law firms and one intellectual property related company for about 12 years and as a freelance translator for translating patent specifications for about 18 years. I have translated about 90 thousand pages (about 300 words / page) of patent specifications into Korean or English. The subjects that I can successfully handle include almost all technical fields. However, most of the works that I have done concerns semiconductor materials, electronics, electricity, mechanics, medical engineering, and computer. I hold the view that to translate is not to simply substitute word for word, but to properly reconstruct the full meaning of the original text by using the building blocks of the target language. I think this should be seriously considered especially in translating between two languages having fundamentally and completely different syntax like English-Korean or English-Japanese pair. Therefore it would never be overemphasized that good translation depends on the capabilities of a translator to grasp the subject of a text to be translated and to re-create it by utilizing a target language. As you know well, the invention is a solution for overcoming a technical problem encountered during interaction between man and environment artificial or natural. Therefore the patent specification should clearly disclose the technical problem and the solution, and in addition the claims are the technical range covered by the solution that the inventor may claim as his own exclusive right. In this context, a good translation of the patent specification can only be attained by a translator, who can clearly comprehend the problem and the solution, has competence in both source and target language, and is well versed in writing patent specifications.
